Gaza is today reeling from the brutal massacre of scores of people in the Shajaiyah neighbourhood east of Gaza City. Israeli tanks relentlessly shelled the area overnight, cutting off electricity and water supplies. Families huddled together, unable to flee because of the danger.

As day broke 40,000 people fled, carrying whatever they could. Bodies began arriving at Shifa Hospital from dawn – some 70 bodies were brought in but scores more dead and wounded still lay in the streets.

Hamas spokesperson Fawzi Barhoum today condemned the massacre.

“This is a war crime, why is there such a deafening silence from the world, from Egypt, from Mr Abbas, from the Arab countries? This encourages the occupation to continue such massacres,” he said in Gaza City.

Salam alaikoom Ustez Barhoum, there is a high value placed on the lives of the innocent, the children are the future and hopefully we can come to some extent of an agreement that the lives of our children are more important than our current political aspirations. True leaders are remembered more when they set aside their anger..putting the welfare of the people above current popular methods of response during wartime conditions. I’m no one of consequence really, though you may have been a friend of my deceased husband. I’ve had various Palestinian students, I grew attached to them and I saw the developing level of intellect that was hopeful for a resolution, a peaceful resolution. Think about how many developing boys and girls whose contributions were denied the Palestinian people who valued their deaths more than their lives. Do you love your people enough to try another strategy, or is your popularity with the Palestinian people held above their rights to live in peace? Various world leaders have always studied the tactics of the most successful leaders of our times.I am a mere layman at this arena, and without stating the obvious strategies of the world’s most famous Presidents and military leadership, why don’t you perhaps peruse them yourself, as advice from a woman from within this stage is most likely uncomfortable for you.I ask your indulgence to allow me the opportunity to insert my opinion. Strength and bravery on the battlefield is highly praised, more praise is generated when one is in control of his or her anger, have you noticed how much strength it requires remaining calm and collected during conflicts…. anybody can wave flags, scream at the top of their lungs, and do all sorts of violence. True love for ones people rises above staying popular, as your real level of strength as their leader is evident in your actions.
